Join us for UP TO FOUR NIGHTS of stargazing when we ring in 2022 with the Quadrantids Meteor Shower! On the nights of December 31st, January 1st, 2nd, and the peak of the meteor shower on the 3rd, this star party will take place under the dark of skies of our Death Valley Stargazing Camp — located just west of the park in Panamint Valley (map here). This property is located on 80 acres of private, pristine desert land in Panamint Valley, just west of Death Valley. The event will feature:

  • Astronomy lectures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights featuring Dr. Cameron Hummels — Computational Astrophysicist at Caltech (IG: @chummels | chummels.org), as well as another speaker TBA

  • Nighttime photography workshop on Saturday and Sunday nights with The World At Night photographer Oshin Zakarian (IG: @OshinZak)

  • Night sky viewing through a 12” Meade telescope

  • SHIFTPOD XL Warming Hut

  • SOUNDBOKS New Year’s ambience

  • Optional add-on a SHIFTPOD to your stay (SOLD OUT)

  • Possibly a food truck?? Working on it!

  • Giveaways TBA

  • Vast desert views and amazing sunsets — endless nearby day trips in Death Valley, Trona Pinnacles, Darwin Falls, and the list goes on!

  • Dark skies and good company!

  • Clean porta-potties comprise our restroom accommodations

  • Please pack it in and pack it out at this primitive location — there is no trash or recycling service

You bring your own car camping setup, tent, food, water, lawn chairs, headlamps (preferably with a red light option), etc., and we’ll bring porta-potties, a location with amazing views, and all the goodies mentioned above. Please note that this is primitive camping aside from the porta-potties as there is no water or electricity onsite. The route to this site includes a county maintained dirt road for the final 8 miles which has been recently graded! Although, please expect some sections being “washboard” by the time winter comes around. Any type of vehicle can make it, but larger trucks and trailers will want to enter from the south through Ballarat, as the road is wider than coming in from the north (both are about 8 miles in distance). Depending on your vehicle type, and if you have a trailer, one can generally travel about 10-45 mph on this final 8 miles. Arrival time is anytime after noon on Friday, December 31st, and check out time is by 1 PM on Tuesday, January 4th. This event is being held at our Death Valley Stargazing Camp, which is just west of the national park boundary near the ghost town of Ballarat, California. Click here for a map of the location. Any type of vehicle can navigate the county maintained dirt road to this location. RVs are fine as well.

The average forecast is mostly sunny/clear with daytime highs in the high 50s or low 60s and overnight lows in the mid 30s. This forecast will be updated as the event gets closer. (Last updated: 5/09/21)
